are you in alignment?

Good Yoga #3

What is alignment?

My mind quickly conjures images of symmetry and perfection. But the dictionary paints another picture. Here are a few definitions:

  • in appropriate relative positions

  • an arrangement of groups or forces in relation to one another.

  • a position of agreement or alliance

Alignment is not about getting it perfect or getting it right. It’s about getting in relationship.

Your body is the perfect place to develop your sense of alignment. And then you expand that sense of “ah, yes, there’s connection and coherence” to other arenas like your actions, intentions, and vision.

Why? Because the body is visible, touch-able, move-able. It’s much more generous with feedback than the wispy winds of your thinking or the murky waters of emotion.

With this perspective, movement practice develops your capacity to seek, restore, and retain alignment. Not alignment as a checklist but as mile markers. And not alignment as a goal but as a skill.

This makes alignment intriguing. Full of opportunity and creativity. Are you with me?

Check out what I consider essential alignment in the Updated Alignment Office Hours. It will transform how you move and relate to your body.

Wanna practice from this perspective? There's a special class this Monday 3/17 at 8:30am. It's Asana Strong, a combination of movement science, strength training and yoga asana. You’ll love it.

May your practice connect your parts,

Alison
