let's talk about pain
Power of Pain #1
Pain. Do you wince at the word? I do. A little bit.
But it's a driver of human behavior.
A universal truth.
And yet.
We rarely talk about it.
A little over a year ago, Dr. Trina Mann of Mindset and Movements presented the Power of Pain. What she has to say will surprise you. Maybe even transform you.
I asked her to give this talk because I've worked with hundreds of clients, thousands of students, and often they're navigating pain through practice. Physical pain like a sensitive lower back, bum knee, or wonky shoulder. Recovering from surgery, tip-toeing around chronic nerve pain, or managing autoimmune inflammation. Sometimes it's mental/emotional pain like grief, anxiety, or depression.
Regardless of the source, most of us have a less-than-skillful response to pain. We push it away, stuff it down, label it as "not that bad". Or we roll around in it. Getting very mucky and murky in the process.
With more understanding, we can respond more skillfully. For example:
Catch the whispers of sensitivity before it becomes a scream.
Know when and how to work through discomfort, especially when the pain has no clear bio-medical source or diagnosis.
How to stay centered and spacious when experiencing physical, mental, or emotional pain.
To gain understanding and develop skill, we're asking:
What is pain? Why do we have it?
What is pain trying to tell us? How can we use it?
How to distinguish between hurt and harm?
How does pain change the body, the brain, and the nervous system?
There will be a community wide Office Hours next Thursday, 11/14 at 11:30am PT. I recommend watching Trina's presentation on the Power of Pain before then. If you can't make the live session, it will be recorded and available for replay.
If you have a Miracle Makers Membership, your resources are here.
If you have a (free) Intro Membership or Toolkit subscription, go here. But don't wait! Free access will only last until 11/21.
May your practice develop skill,
Alison
